Hi everyone,

I'm wanting to start a basic looking blog - done not perfect -but I don't know what to write in the very first post.
Has anyone got any advice, please? The bloggers I follow have been doing so for years so their first ones are very hard to find.
Do I launch straight into a subject? Introduce myself? I would really appreciate any advice you have.

Thank you

Hi it's me again lol...

Save the introduction stuff for your about page, everyone should have one whether it's a blog, store or website. Maybe your first post could be about what led you to create a blog in the first place, or possibly be about what you hope to accomplish through your blog. What you hope readers will find useful, etc...

Personally, I have many many niches and a website or blog or both to match them. Each one is different, in the sense that I tried to tell a story about the purpose of the blog. For instance, in my vintage blog/website, I tell stories about my family, or something about vintage clothing or yesteryear (in dire need of attention) you could see what I mean here:

Angel Wing Vintage

Browse around to see how I made different pages have their own personality (and find a couple freebies too). You also might find my about page of some use, and please check out some of the stories.
In any case, my point is Niche, or Not to Niche, that is the question.
And make your about page about You, and your blog posts about what your blog caters to, with you as the story teller!.

Anyone else, please chime in, give Steph some more ideas, I know they are out there.

I Steph,
I just tried to click on your Facebook link on your profile, and discovered it's in valid, I also checked out your profile and discovered your Etsy link is also not clickable. I of course copied and pasted it, because you neglected to say what your interests were (for your blog) so I was trying to see if you page or Etsy store would clue me lol.

My advice is more for what I discovered than your new blog, but I think what I am about to say is just as important.
Learning how to both create clickable links, and also how to utilize places like this forum. I think the admin does not have this advice yet in the list of things this forum can do, but she should  @CMA Admin

Learning the first thing is not hard, but I will focus on the second here:
Your facebook link at the bottom of your posts, if you run your mouse over it, you will notice it has the facebook url in there twice. This happens because you must only put you facebook user (or page) name in this slot, not the full url.

There is also a place on your forum profile page, for a blog and a website. You added etsy as your website, but it does not show up on your forum profile posts, because you did not add an https:// to the beginning. This is internet speak for "hey I'm a website link" lmao!

So one of the first things you should do, is use the forum here, to be sure all your profile areas that are public (or members only) is correct, so you can get more exposure. If this is done correctly, your links will show up as clickable on all your posts too.

I know the admin here is working hard to get this place to it's full potential, and has given anyone who wants to be here, a dashboard basically, to utilize to help get more exposure and leads to your posts, websites and blogs, but as the old saying goes, if you don't utilize the tools, you don't get the benefits.

Forums are funny places, they are so good for networking and promoting for any person. The trick is to learn how to use them. I am so happy for this new forum for a number of reasons, one being it has rules, but is also has a lot of freedom for members to gain more influence too.

As far as the learning how to create clickable links, I can't tell you how, because I don't really know how to write it here, but not writing clickable links in your posts and all, limits the chances of that exposure. Try to remember, those links are not just for the person reading the posts or articles, it is also for the search engines, as that is how they find you or your posts (like on your future blog)!

Don't mean to sound preachy or anything, I just think these small things are really important, and are basic things everyone should be aware of.

Hi Melody,

You're not being preachy at all, your post is super helpful. Thank you for teaching me. Plenty of points to work through - just how I like it Smile
This is the first forum I have ever been apart of, so learning how to utilize the platform as well as how to properly write with clickable links, is definitely an ongoing process.

As for the non-valid links, I will fix those now as well as check the clickability on the other profile links I have set up across the web. It sounds naive but I never even realised that I had to put https:// at the beginning Rolling Eyes
