EchoesEchoes of her running through his mind
As days become years ...
Barely there --
Remembering only the outline of her against the stormy night sky
Tears falling down his cheeks ...
Echoes of a time when he was in love... and loved
Closing his eyes
Trying to save what little there is of her in his memories
Her voice echoes against his soul
Her tears, her hopeful smile that this time he could change...
Echoes of what he said, still burning deep in his soul…
He could have changed... yet choosing not to,
Thinking she would never leave...
Thinking she didn’t have it in her to go..
Looking back, he should have known
Yet
Why did he choose to hurt her so?
Echoes ... that is all he has left--
The sound of the door shutting, tears falling, the car driving off
She never looked back…
Just echoes... and then, empty silence...
By Kim Snyder, copyright 2024 - this poem can't be found anywhere else. A lot of my poetry comes from a thought or even just words from a song. This poem was written after hearing a song about lost of a loved one that was all his mistake. I thought of it as Echoes, we all have them. Echoes of things we have forgotten, but somehow are able to hold on to an image, a scent of a perfume left in the air, a scent on grandfathers clothes of cherry wood and smoke when he hugs you.
