Back in December, my grandson brought home an apple he got from school and was eating it for his after school snack. We got to talking about apples and how they come from trees and how the different kinds of apples taste differently. He was asking some very insightful questions for a 5 year old! (PROUD GRANDMA HERE).
Right about this time he took a big bite into the middle of the apple and ended up with a mouthful of seeds. So, he came up with the idea that we needed to plant these seeds so we could have more apples. I explained we needed to let them dry a bit and then we could put them in a pot but not to get his hopes up if they don't grow. So many plants are now barren from genetic modification that it is hard to know what will grow for you. Well, we waited 4 days and then planted 5 seeds in the pot, watered it and Jaxon kept a close eye on the pot every day after school. Guess what! We got 2 seedlings sprouted!
Sorry the picture is sideways! lol But you can see the babies. Jaxon did his own little dance party around the kitchen and I wasn't far behind him. In all, it took about 9 days to sprout and we kept the soil moist but not wet, which is very important. You don't want mold to grow on your seeds. No matter how many 100's of seeds I have planted, I always get excited when they first show their little heads!
This is 4 days old:
As you can see, they are growing fast but too skinny. We want a thicker body on the plant. I moved the pot over to be under the grow lights and they really took off! Since they didn't have leaves yet, I don't believe the lighting was making them grow but the fact it was warmer under the lights.
This next picture I just took and the babies would be about 8 days old here. You can see the one in the front still has the seed shell on his head but does have one leaf out to start photosynthizing. The back plant is totally out of his shell and has multiple leaves. They are fattening up a bit, which is really what I wanted. I want more around than up, if you know what I mean. When seeds are just starting to sprout, they get all their energy from the seed. Once that seed shell is gone and they have leaves, they start making their own energy using photosynthesis.
I will keep you updated on the apple trees and how they are doing.
If anyone has any questions or comments, please feel free to ask or speak. Let me know what you are most interested in talking about in the Green Miracle world. I will try to accomadate you.
Bye for now.
